Cadence

Streetlights flicker through the shade A sudden rush of passing gears The promises that we had made Dissolving over several years We step outside the open yard Where diesel smoke and gravel meet The road is long, the surface hard Beneath the pattern of our feet Break the cadence, count the beat Echoes running down the street Turning over every stone Never walking back alone
