Gravel and Current

Cold air across the gravel track The chimney smoke is blowing low There is no looking further back Than where the winter currents go Low water mark along the bay The stones are bare beneath the grey We watch the lantern on the quay Turn slow across the rising sea An open book beside the lamp With pencil lines along the seam The floorboards creak against the damp And silence settles on the stream
