Southern Gate

Under the iron trestle bridge We watch the signal lanterns blink A sudden shift upon the ridge Before the frozen channel sinks Cold engines hum across the bay We mark the markers as they fade No easy word left to convey Beneath the concrete colonnade Static rising on the line Clear the signal, take the sign Every corner turns to slate Meet me at the southern gate
