Charcoal Gridlines

[Verse 1] Stepping off the curb with the collar pulled high Counting every shadow underneath the grey sky Pavement tells a story in the cracks and the seams Filing every moment in a notebook of dreams Tick of the wristwatch keeping pace with the stride Watching how the river meets the incoming tide Thoughts on loop while the streetlights hum Waiting for the dawn and the day to come [Chorus] Charcoal gridlines marking out the lane Walking through the mist of the early morning rain Footprints vanish on the cold stone street Finding my momentum in the steady bass beat [Verse 2] Corner shop shutters rolling up for the trade Steam from the vent where the kettle was made Reading between lines on the blueprint page Time keeps moving like an actor on a stage Pocket full of tokens and a sketch of the view Turning every corner till the layout is new Quiet in the alleyways, calm on the block Measuring the minutes on an analog clock
