Night Transit

[Verse 1] Empty train carriage moving slow on the track Rattling windows with the night at our back Reflections in the glass showing double of the scene Passing by the stations that are silent and serene Yellow line borders and the echo of the chime Taking mental inventory one memory at a time Steel on the rail singing low in the dark Passing by the outlines of an empty city park [Chorus] Night transit gliding through the sleeping town Watch the amber signals as the speed winds down No destination that we need to define Just rolling down the track on the outer circle line [Verse 2] Platform displays flickering in neon and slate Nobody is rushing, nobody is late Subway map tracing out a spiderweb trail Following the path of the electric third rail Breathing in the rhythm of the tunnel and the breeze Drifting through the boroughs with a quiet kind of ease Turn the tape over let the melody rewind Leaving all the clutter of the daytime behind
